A waterfront checklist for Florida hurricane season

Storm season is hard on waterfront structures. A little preparation protects your investment.

Before the season

The best time to address a weak dock or seawall is before a storm tests it. A pre-season look at your waterfront structures catches the small problems that storms turn into big ones.

  • Inspect seawall caps and joints for cracks and gaps
  • Check for soil loss or voids behind the wall
  • Look for leaning, bowing, or scour at the base
  • Confirm dock pilings are sound and hardware is tight
  • Clear loose items that can become debris in high wind

As a storm approaches

Secure or remove anything on docks and decks that could break loose. Move boats and floating structures per your hurricane plan. Don't attempt structural work in deteriorating conditions.

After the storm

Once it's safe, check for new cracks, shifted panels, undermined ramps, damaged pilings, and debris. Document damage with photos for insurance, and get a professional assessment before the next system arrives.

  • New or widened cracks in walls and caps
  • Panels or sections that shifted
  • Undermining or scour at walls and ramps
  • Damaged or displaced pilings and dock sections
  • Debris lodged against structures

We're here after the storm

AVS Marine handles storm-damage assessment, repair, demolition of failed structures, and rebuilds across our Florida service area. Call early — demand spikes after a storm.
